Urban conversion and development of the first Smart Street in Romania

Project objective

Molnar Piuariu Street is located in the second most populated neighborhood in Cluj-Napoca and with the most reduced recreational area in relation to the number of inhabitants. The street provides access to the riverside: a university campus, collective or individual housing and commercial spaces. With about 1700 students, the campus generates an acute need for public spaces with related services and facilities. The high number of parked cars, the lack of organization or demarcation between road surface and sidewalks, the scarcity of trees and green spaces, the accessibility and attractiveness of pedestrian movement were a major inconvenience.

Beneficiaries

Proiectul a urmărit să ofere prioritate pietonilor și mijloacelor de transport nemotorizat. Calmarea traficului auto prin configurarea profilului stradal, restricționarea accesului, reorganizarea intersecțiilor și ridicarea lor la nivelul trotuarelor sunt principalele măsuri prevăzute, care sporesc semnificativ beneficiile sociale ale unei vecinătăți dinamice și complexe. Realizarea unei zone verzi cu arbori, arbuști și sistem de irigații cu senzori a devenit o prioritate pentru acesta zonă dens populate.

„ The first smart street in Romania was realized by Cluj-Napoca City Hall with European funding and has all the facilities of a modern public space, adapted to the current technological and urban mobility realities. In addition to the spatial reorganization - including the elimination of level differences between the exclusively pedestrian space and the road space - and the urban facilities mentioned, the elements of the area's public infrastructure were moved underground. At the same time, the space has been adapted for people with disabilities and their protection (pavements with integrated tactile signage)",
